HEALING HERBS: A case for mammee apples

We know the feeling when we or our loved ones walk on to the stage to receive that certificate or scroll on graduation day. However, the thrill of receiving the highest award in any field, including first class honours or high commendations, is unexplainable.

As we proceed through life, it is important to set high standards and goals if we want to be extremely successful. At an early age I had many aspirations which included being at peace with my Creator, being married to a superb man, becoming a distinguished teacher, a health writer, public speaker and being a passionate community activist.

As I enter the departure lounge towards retirement, I am satisfied that nearly all of my aspirations became reality. I never allowed anyone to hinder me from progressing and achieving what I came on this planet to fulfill. We will always encounter stumbling blocks but they are part of the success journey; that is why we have to overcome them.

I urge all readers to recognise that those people who believe they can stop others from achieving their goals are still at the bottom battling with themselves spiritually. Once you are shrewd and know who you are, success will manifest itself.

Today, we will examine a silent doctor which has withstood many battles in the Caribbean, is often forgotten or destroyed but continues to be distinguished as a successful healer.

Mammee apple, Santo Domingo apricot or maney apple is actually a berry. I adore this fruit; my sister has a blessed tree and provides the family with the fruit. It is an excellent antioxidant and fights free radicals.

When I mix mammee apples with ginger and cinnamon in a fruit salad, the taste is astounding.

Mammee apple is loaded with many nutrients, including iron, vitamins A, B and C, dietary fibre, magnesium, copper, zinc, potassium and phosphorous. The copper content in a mammee apple is excellent. A diet deficient in copper may lead to thyroid problems, anaemia, low skin pigmentation, elevated cholesterol, dilated veins, brittle bones, uneven heartbeat and a low resistance to infections.

My advice is to consume “nuff” mammee apples. They can assist with, improve or protect against almost 45 health challenges including diabetes, haemorrhoids, cancer, constipation, eczema, depression, asthma, insomnia, fatigue, heart attack, Alzheimer’s, viral infections, vision problems, circulation and dizziness.

We in Barbados must research and consume more of this incredible fruit. Additionally, culinary artists must incorporate the fruit into more dishes especially at the NIFCA level. Mammee apples are truly for thyroid and overall health.
