HEALING HERBS: My mulberry blessing

“If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea’ and it will obey you. – Luke 17:6 (New International Version)

Faith and gratitude continue to circulate in my world. This is occurring because my pregnant mulberry tree is daily delivering fruit and we are blessed to eat them directly from the tree.

My mulberries are very juicy, delicious and the leaves extremely eye-appealing. I thank the Soil Conservation Unit in St Andrew for selling me my mulberry tree. My mother, too, is harvesting her fruit and she makes a tasty juice.

Last week I received many text and emails asking if strawberries could really grow here. I am telling you yes! Strawberries can be grown and nurtured in Barbados and if you continue to read this column, I will floor you with evidence of other home-grown exotic fruit like silent doctor strawberries and mulberries.

Research reveals that these innocent “back to Eden” silent doctors have many healing properties. The root, stem, bark, twigs and roots are used for healing. In Brazil the mulberry leaves are used to lower cholesterol and high blood pressure.

They are also used for chronic hepatitis, headaches, diabetes, cough, fever, constipation, backache, eyestrain, rheumatic arthritis, lumbago and leg pains. The juice of the bark is used for epilepsy in children.

Sweating feet, dropsy and intestinal disorders can also be treated with mulberries. They can also assist people who want to promote hair growth and rejuvenate their hair follicles, especially cancer patients who have undergone chemotherapy.

They can also assist in preventing cancer, reduce the risk of blood clots and strokes, cleanse the blood thus improving circulation, and strengthen the kidneys and liver. Mulberries can also maintain heart health, speed up recovery after childbirth and surgery, improve vision and enhance appetite and immunity. You must also take some time to research the many skin care benefits of mulberries.

I am deeply in love with my mulberry tree and have it within my view for its aesthetics and antioxidant properties. You must try to acquire a tree and gain excitement as the fruit changes colour as it ripens.
