Combermere School and the Old Scholars were victorious when the Barbados Hockey Federation’s 7-A-Side and Outdoor Club tournaments continued last weekend.
Led by a hat-trick from national youth hopeful Vanessa Chewitt, Combermere School blanked Banks 9-0 in 7-A-Side action at the Wildey Astro Turf. There was a brace for Richanne Gaskin and Jodie Grant while Tiffany Belle and D’Jamilla Edwards also got on the score sheet.
Combermere School Old Scholars (CSOS) went even better, trouncing Barbados Union of Teachers 10-0 in another women’s game. Katrina Greaves got a hat-trick while Shavonne Perch, Teri Alleyne and Camille Pounder each scored twice, with Louise Morris rounding off the goal harvest.
In the Women’s Outdoor Tourney at Bank Hall, CSOS edged Banks 1-0, courtesy a 12th-minute goal from Greaves, while powerhouses CGI Maple and United Insurance Empire battled to a 2-2 nail-biter.
Maple opened the scoring in the seventh minute through a well-placed shot from the top of the “D”’ from Takirsha Cambridge. In an exciting last four minutes, Empire equalized through a brilliant penalty corner deflection from young Ayanna Maughan. However, Maple immediately responded from the touch-off when Marsha Drakes scored into a vacant Empire goal.
But Empire earned a penalty corner in the last minute and in what looked like a rehearsed set piece, senior national Dionne Clarke took the last pass and slotted it home to level the score 2-2, leaving both teams on four points.
In men’s action, All Stars beat YMCA 1-0 while Empire put a 5-0 thrashing on the University of the West Indies Hockey Club (UWIHC), who were without rising goalkeeper Justin Taitt.
Akeel Trotman-Grant opened the scoring in the third minute and further goals came from Che Warner (4th), Akeil Craig-Browne (17th) and Laurando Davis (22nd) before Jabari Brathwaite netted the lone goal in the second half. (PR/EZS)
