Hostile bosses knocked

Efforts by employers to reverse gains made in workers’ rights will be the topic of discussion at the Barbados Workers’ Union upcoming 71st annual delegates’ conference.
At yesterday’s Press briefing to launch the conference, general secretary Sir Roy said some employers were hostilely and unpleasantly denying employees freedom of association.
He said that even with the good news of the passage of the Employment Rights Act recently, some employers were ensuring that employees received the full measure of the anger and disagreement if they decided to join trade unions or exercised their right of freedom of association.
“Employers who cannot deny the freedom of association are endeavouring to deny the right to bargain collectively where collective agreements are in place,” Sir Roy said. He added that new employers who took over companies were deciding to rule with “a fist of iron”, not allowing workers to enjoy rights they previously enjoyed. (LK)
