Hot words in House

Hot words in House MP Steve Blackett. (FP)

Wed, November 21, 2012 - 12:08 AM

Tempers flared yesterday in the House of Assembly and degenerated into a verbal assault on a Government MP, while an Opposition member was barred from continuing his presentation and threatened with further sanction.

The drama unfolded during the post-lunch session of debate on a resolution to grant $614 000 from the Consolidated Fund to support Government’s National Summer Camps Programme.

During the session, carried live on radio, St Michael Central MP Steve Blackett accused the Opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) members of behaving as though they did “not like poor people” because of their refusal to support programmes such as the free summer camps and free bus rides for schoolchildren.

However, in his address Christ Church West MP Dr William Duguid charged that the entire Summer Camps Programme was a grand design by the ruling Democratic Labour Party (DLP) to win the next general election. (GE)

Taxpayer-funded (not 'free") bus passes should be issued only to needy students as assessed by the Welfare department or school. All others should pay.
Summer camps are a good idea but there should be a fee attached. At some point, parents have to take responsibility for their chidren and learn to spend time with them and plan their own activities. Taxpayers do enough by providing their education.
Many "poor' people are the "voluntary poor"who choose to be unemployed dependents of the state.
Politicians need to stop pandering to that for the sake of votes and encourage people to get up and help themselves and their children.

As for free bus fares the children ride all about the place, late at nigh too, they even go by friends, these are things that I know, They should be made to pay at least $1 a week, I have children going to school too, and some people send their children to collect things for them on the free bus fares, You blame them No its
