Runner Rosette Hoyte proved to be just that when she ran a blistering anchor leg in scorching heat to give her new school Christ Church Foundation the Girls’ Under-15 title in the National Sports Council’s secondary schools relay yesterday.

When Hoyte, who had attended perennial champions Springer Memorial for the past three years, received the baton just in front of the entrance to the National Stadium, Coleridge & Parry (CP) had opened up a one-minute gap and almost 250 yards on Foundation.

At that stage CP’s fans started a premature celebration particularly seeing that they had reduced a lead established by Foundation’s Hannah Connell and Cheyenne Cummins. A poor leg from another acquisition, Leilani Haddock from Lester Vaughan, helped CP to chop down a 50-yard gap and open up their advantage.

However, with tremendous determination and a strong finish, Hoyte brought home the Christ Church team in a time of 23.18 minutes. CP finished in 23.44 while Lester Vaughan stopped the clock in 24.45.

The Alleyne School took the Boys’ Under-15 event in 19.44 with a consistent CP placing second and Queen’s College third.

New term transfers also proved effective for the Lodge School, with twins Romario and Akeem Marshall moving from Grantley Adams to help their new school to take the senior title in 16.35 minutes, while Lester Vaughan placed second in 17.48 and QC third in 17.56.

The St Michael School captured the senior girls in a time of 23.50 with Foundation placing second in 24.01 and The Lodge third in 24.44. The Lodge School were the only double winners, with their girls taking the first formers crown in a time of 25.17. Second were the Alleyne in 25.19 while CP took the third spot in a time of 26.47.

The first-form boys’ race was also close, with a two-second gap separating first and second. St Leonard’s Boys’ took the top spot in a time of 22.19 while QC were second in 22.21. CP placed third in 22.44 for the Ashton Hall institution to end the day with four top three finishes.

Girls champions Springer, Harrison College and Combermere were noticeable absentees. (KB)
