TORONTO – Barbadian jockey Patrick Husbands continued to dominate the money earnings at Woodbine racetrack, scoring his 12th added-money race of the season on Sunday when he carried 4-1 chance Eff Bee Eye to victory in the co-feature CAN$125 000 Nandi Stakes.
The veteran reinsman stalked with the bay before coming from off the pace to beat the two-year-old fillies by 3-1/4 lengths clear in a time of one minute, 11.17 seconds.
With the victory, the Robert Tiller-trained animal moved to two wins in three outings.
“Today we drew on the outside and the start before was on the inside and she missed the break and then she was fighting down the backside. It wasn’t a fair race for her,” Husbands said afterward.
“Today she ran like Bob [Tiller] told me she would. She’s a nice filly. She ran like she was the best horse today, because the race set up for her.”
Going six furlongs, She’s Explosive ripped the field through an opening quarter in 21.73 seconds in a duel with favourite Mel’s Ring in hot pursuit.
Husbands raced Eff Bee Eye in third and as the race swung for home, roused her with a sporadic left-handed whip, to charge down the leaders. They got to the front mid-stretch and romped to the finish emphatically.
The victory was one of two on the day’s ten-race card for Husbands who also took the CAN$55 900 Race 2 with 3-1 bet Conquest Harlanate, going six furlongs for two-year-old fillies.
Husbands also came close in the day’s main feature, the $178 500 Seagram Stakes when he finished second aboard 3-1 chance Sky Captain, as 7-1 outsider His Race To Win snatched victory by 1-1/4 lengths.
Sunday’s stakes success was Husbands’ second in as many days following his capture of the Eternal Search Stakes with Sweater Weather on Saturday.
Husbands tops the earnings at Woodbine with CAN$4.4 million but sits third in the jockeys’ standings with 70 wins, behind leader Luis Contreras on 79 and Eurico Rosa da Silva on 72. (CMC)
