Governor of the Central Bank of Barbados, Dr DeLisle Worrell, has neither the right nor the power to ban any journalist or media house.
That is the view of Leader of the Opposition Mia Mottley, who yesterday expressed outrage at the “rash” and “dictatorial” act by Worrell to ban journalists from THE NATION newspaper from any event hosted by him as Governor of the Central Bank.
Worrell communicated his intention last Friday in a letter to Publisher and Chief Executive Officer Vivian-Anne Gittens, following a story which appeared the previous day about falling revenues and persistent losses forcing the bank to “shrink our operation”.
The Governor took umbrage to the fact that even though he did not state how many people were to be laid off, the front page headline read 60 TO GO.
The “error” was brought to the attention of the Editor-in-Chief and a clarification was carried in last Friday’s WEEKEND NATION.
