Indecision caused Caribbean Airlines crash

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) – Officials investigating a July 2011 Caribbean Airlines plane crash in Guyana have issued their final report and found that poor cockpit communication caused the crash.

The South American country’s transportation ministry said late Friday that coordination between the captain and co-pilot broke down as the Boeing 737-800 landed.

The plane overshot the runway and broke in half near a ravine. No one died although one passenger’s leg was amputated.

The plane was carrying 157 passengers and six crew members.

Ministry spokeswoman Paula McAdam said investigators including the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board found that pilots failed to reduce excess power during landing and did not use the plane’s full deceleration capabilities.

She said the flight crew’s indecision about whether to execute a second landing attempt also led to the crash.
