International business ‘thriving’

THOSE WHO work in the international business sector stand a better chance of getting a salary increase from their bosses than employees in the public and local private sectors.

So said Carmel Haynes, consultant to Barbados International Business Association, during a career showcase held on the Guild Lawn of the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus yesterday.

University students and graduates interested in pursuing careers in the international business sector got expert guidance from professionals within the field, drawn from the public and private sectors.

“BIBA did a compensation survey at the end of last year; one of the interesting results that we found is that between 2010 when we did our last survey and 2013, the majority of the firms had given their staff raises each year. You contrast that with the domestic business sector where many people are concerned about their jobs and if they are going to receive raises. So we want to send that positive message that the international business sector is thriving and it needs skilled, rejuvenated employees.”

Haynes said the showcase aimed to show that there was a role for everyone in the international business sector. (JS)
