Island to stand still for victims

Island to stand still for victims Prime Minister David Thompson

Tue, September 07, 2010 - 12:00 AM

Barbados will “pause and pray” at noon on Friday as a mark of respect for lives lost in last Friday’s tragic fire in Tudor Street.

And Government’s Cabinet sub-committee will also be hosting an emergency meeting this week to review all laws, practices and penalties in so far as such is required, since the tragedy.

Prime Minister David Thompson has requested that all activity on the island, including speech and movement of individuals and vehicular traffic, come to a standstill for three minutes on Friday, as the country reflects on “this most dastardly incident” and commiserates with families of the deceased.

In a statement released last night, Thompson said he shared the pain, sadness and outrage of all Barbadians, and has placed the full support of  Government at the disposal of the Royal Barbados Police Force to “crack this case and bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice”.

He noted that in many respects what was needed was enforcement of the law, and this would be the focus of the emergency meeting.

The Prime Minister also appealed to all Barbadians to respond positively and participate fully in Friday’s three minutes of “pause and prayers”. (PR)

It would be nice if the Government of Barbados could pay the funeral expenses for the six victims. This is the least the people of Barbados can do to help in this very sad situation. Again I send my love to the families of the six victims, may the peace of GOD be with them. May he grant them the strength and courage to carry on at this very difficult time. I also hope that Barbadians are prepared for the hurricane season, because as was seen on Friday, anything can happen at any time. Let us all realize that we can be impacted by negative situation when least expected.

Yogi, not so much the Govt. Of Barbados could pay for the funeral expenses but how about the owner(s) of the said store, in thanksgiving for their lives. According to the paper, 1 of them was working there for about 31/2 yrs, maybe she could have work some place else, but she stayed there. That counts for something. I known some of youall bajans down there, don’t like when we up here say anything, but you who harbouring those evil doers, youall need to turn them in. For the police.. keep checking the airport & the ships. turn up every stone.

As a citzen of this country I am very much pleased with the decisions made by the Prime Minister to honour the lives that hav ebben lost. However, a state funeral for all the deceased if the families will allow it should also occur at a location large enough such as Kensington Oval where the family an friends many pay their last respects together for each victim alike.

I am deeply sadden by what has happened in Barbados. My partner and I are still coming to Barbados to spend our last days if God spare life. This could have happened anywhere and lots worst has happened in the outside world.
I beg those Bajans with a conscience to please let the police know of anyone you suspect may have a hand with Tudor Street. I will join you all with 3 minutes silence.
May god bless the families and friends of those who died.

There is absolutely no reason for these families to be hurting like this, but for the dastardly act of a few low-life individuals, you, with blatant disregard for human life, choose to take these innocent young people away from their loved ones. I trust that, when these thugs are captured, justice will be swift and decisive. If it were possible, I would volunteer to pull the lever or administer the fatal injection to remove these misfits from society. I am so angry about this. However, I understand that cooler heads must prevail, and I have no doubt that adequate justice will be meted out.

I applaud the PM for his declaration of absolute silence and non-movement but this should be a National Day of Mourning with both parties paying the costs of the funerals, including those whose loved ones have taken them back to their countries. I am saddened as a bajan that the integrity, reputation and values of my country are under attack from a foe that is more deadlier than any plague or illness. This tragedy was broadcast nationwide and as result, many people who would visit Barbados will think hard before visiting; which will result in decrease in tourism and further weaken an already fragile economy. Lets get these bastards!

I am sadden as a Bajan that something like this happened, my heart goes out to all the families
and friends, may God give them strength to carry on.
The Bastards that done this terrible thing is not human,
and Ipray and hope that they find both of them and deal with them in the most harsh way[Hanging or injection].

Please get those demons,
and do away with them.

And yes I do think that the Govt of barbados should help with the funeral expenses for all six.

The building owner should contribute - since if the building was properly build with an escape route or even a window in the bathroom for these young ladies to jump out - we may not have been mourning their loss.
