Jail job? Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite. (FP)

By Mike King | Mon, July 09, 2012 - 12:12 AM

Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite says measures have to be put in place to deal with the rising number of people on remand at Her Majesty’s Prisons Dodds in St Philip.

Brathwaite told the DAILY NATION he would have to speak to Superintendent of Prisons Lieutenant Colonel John Nurse about finding creative ways for those on remand to spend their time while in prison.

“We don’t have a structure in place for those who are on remand,” he noted. “It is of concern to me that we can have people up here for a week or a month, up here simply doing nothing, as they are not prisoners.

“We may require the intervention of the Superintendent of Prisons to look at a structured programme for them,” he said.

The Member of Parliament for St Philip South said it was far from ideal to have those on remand idle.

The available space at Dodds to accommodate remand folks, is not the root of the problem, it is the symptom, and one should never treat symptoms. It is our clogged-up, slow, inefficient courts! Having spent a gazillion dollars (borrowed from CLICO, and undoubtedly being repaid with interest), no actual improvement in the functioning of our courts has been evident. Yet proud Bajans' hearts swell with pride as we drive past such a magnificent testament to the "rule of law". Misplaced priorities, perhaps?

Mr. Attorney General, it is far from ideal to have persons on remand for that long duration of time before their cases come up for trial. This shows a serious problem with your judicial system, not the prison system.
