GOVERNOR GENERAL Sir Elliot Belgrave will address a joint sitting of the House of Assembly and Senate next Thursday on the occasion of the 375th Anniversary of the Parliament of Barbados, the third oldest in the Commonwealth.
The sitting, which takes place at 4 p.m., is being held on the date which is officially recognised as the Anniversary of Parliament.
There will also be addresses by Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, President of the Senate Kerryann Ifill, the Speaker of the House Michael Carrington and Leader of the Opposition Mia Mottley.
Besides members of the House of Assembly and Senate, the session will also be attended by former presiding officers and members of both Houses, former cabinet ministers, foreign ambassadors and other dignitaries. Also in attendance will be the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago Wade Mark.
The last sitting of this type where the Queen’s representative and members of the Upper House were invited to sit with the Lower House, was on the occasion of the 350th anniversary Joint Sitting of Parliament, held on Monday, June 26, 1989.
Activities marking  the 375th Anniversary officially got under way on February 28, when Government, in association with the local chapter of the Royal Commonwealth Society, hosted a reception in the courtyard of Parliament, which was attended by the Earl and Countess of Wessex.
Their Royal Highnesses were in Barbados for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards and as guests of the Royal Commonwealth Society. (BGIS)
