PRIME MINISTER Freundel Stuart may be forced to intervene to bring the dispute raging at The Alexandra School to an end.

After nearly five hours of intense deliberations yesterday, Minister of Education Ronald Jones said he had been unable to broker a settlement of the dispute between the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union (BSTU) and Alexandra School principal Jeff Broomes.

He told reporters last night, after the four-and-a-half-hour meeting with nearly two dozen teachers led by BSTU president Mary Redman, that it may now be up to either “a delegation of Cabinet ministers or the Prime Minister” to deal with the escalating dispute that has also affected teaching at several other secondary schools.

“Since I have been here, four years now, we have not had this kind of extreme industrial action. I sought to use my good office to bring about a resolution but this has not happened to date,” he said.

US President #26, Theodore Roosevelt was the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in brokering peace between imperialist rivals, Russia and Japan in 1906. In this same year, Roosevelt is again a successful mediator. He negotiates peace between France and Germany who are contesting control of Morocco in North Africa. It is argued that Teddy’s interventions, in some measure stalled the outbreak of World War One by almost ten years. What lessons are there, if any, for Jones and the Rest? Probably none. Wait ten years, you’ll get a messy war and ‘your good office’ wont be a sufficient balm, perhaps.

This whole affair stems from an elitist mentality.Everyone at Alexander School feel that because they at “Alexander School ” they should be treated differently. From the principal, teachers and students. They all believe that some secondary schools in Barbados are more equal than others.

That is the only reason I can see there being a separate workers union for those teachers from the older secondary schools. Why else would you have a union for teachers from the older secondary schools distinct from the newer secondary schools ? I thought as there were all secondary schools one union will do.

Then again I did not pass the 11 plus exam so I won’t be able to figure that out as I ain’t so bright.

Again, I am saying the only persons who are and will continue to suffer through this unnecessary ordeal are the students.

CXC exams are only but a few months away. When those senior students supervise the junior students they will have no time to concentrate on their work. Can’t anybody see that?

Education really ain’t common sense!

Deduct their pay for every day they are off the job and see what happens.
