Minister of Education Ronald Jones is now being blamed for the Alexandra impasse. (FP)

Blame Minister of Education Ronald Jones for the current state of affairs at the Alexandra School, says Opposition spokesman on education, Cynthia Forde.
She said the “suffering” of the almost 1 000 students should be eased by bringing in temporary or retired teachers to fill in for the more than 30 striking members of the Barbados Secondary Teachers Union (BSTU).
Forde argued yesterday that Jones could have prevented the impasse – now in its second week – if he had acted on recommendations received more than six months ago for healing both the “strained” relationship between principal Jeff Broomes and the board of management.
She said the rifts “are militating against the continued development of the school”.

I am not one to comment on these articles but will voice my thoughts on this.
If the Minister of Education is in fact in possession of the report and have been tardy in acting on the recommendation then they must bare some responsibility for the current happenings. However, this administration has only been in power since 2008. From all reports, issues have been brewing since 2002.
Did the previous administration carry out such an inspection carried between 2002 and the end of 2007? I like to be fair in my assessments. If not, why not ?
Under the Education Act, inspections can be carried out all schools. It can be said that if the inspection was done back then and recommendations acted upon then we would not have this problem now, much as if action was taken on recommendations of the existing report.
At least kudos must be given to the current leadership for ensuring that the Inspection was done in the first place.
Let’s hope that a swift resolution can be had as the only ones who are really suffering are the children by being held to ransom.

Comment LinkSad to say ,I have to cross party lines and agree with the opposition on this one. I hope the prime minister pay attention, uncle arthur has patiently waited in the wings for the right time to enter into this crisis. This is political strategy at it’s finest. Whatever Mr. Jones thinks he may owe mr. broomes, he better remember he owes the people or barbados more. all this big chest, high horse pompersetting gotta go.@minister jones we put you there and we will move you on election day

Comment LinkWhy blame Jones, blame the Prime Minister. He’s the one that’s suppose to be in charge not Jones. Barrow and Thompson have got to be having a conversation as to what did we do wrong and I would say (NOTHING) to the real late Prime Ministers. Time and time again Stuart sits back and let others come forward. You are the leader Sir, step out infront sometimes, especially if your young people are hurting. How can a Goverment allow teachers to strike.

Comment LinkCynthia Forde!!Please keep your Politics out of this mess, and stop trying to blame The Minister for trying not to antagonize the BSTU and Mary Redman any further. You know as well as anyone else that if they try to put anyone into that school to teach the union will pull ALL of its membership out on the picket line as they (The Reserves) will be called STRIKE BREAKING SCABS this will be escalating not solving the problem. It would do you a lot better if you could/would come up with a way to solve the problem not to make it worse by scattering more blame around in this PARTISAN way.

Comment Link@ andy lovell,, When you appoint someone to do a job. You should allow that person to do such .if and when that person has failed to do the said job then and only then do you intervene..and the intervention may and can have consequences. by you calling for the prime ministers intervention you are implying that the minister has failed in his duties, if so’ he can and should be blamed
