Juniors seize Day 1 of Classic

IT WAS THE JUNIORS who stole the show last Saturday, the first day of the 2012 Barbados Olympians Classic at the National Stadium.
Impressing was CARIFTA bronze medalist Shakera Hall who lowered her time in the Under-20 girls’ 100 metres hurdles to 13.75 seconds, qualifying for the IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona July 10 to 15.Hall’s previous best was the 13.82 she did at CARIFTA Games in Bermuda.
Kenrisha Brathwaite won the race in 13.71 seconds, providing the target for Hall to chase. Kierre Beckles did not get her race together and was third in 14.12 seconds. Brathwaite’s time was a qualifier for the North America Central America and Caribbean Under-23 Championships which are slated Mexico, July 6 to 8.
Akela Jones, who won a silver medal in the Under-20 girls’ high jump at the CARIFTA Games by clearing 1.80 metres, a height she had not done for a full year, proved it was not a fluke by reprising that performance. She has already qualified for World Juniors and added that event to the long jump.
