Barbadian Kesia Estwick is on a roll!
With five more episodes to go on Mission Catwalk, Tuesday night’s avant garde challenge saw Estwick’s black dress out of recycled newspaper placing in the Top 3.
While the winner was Jamaican Crystal Powell, who wowed the judges with an avant garde couture garment made from alternative material – old newspapers and material from a hardware store – alas, the other Bajan left in the competition, Kerin Scott (with a fab necklace made out of mop strings) had a scare when she was placed in the bottom three. However, she made it through
to next week while Ryan Berkley of Guyana was sent home.
Yes, the suspense has us on the edge of our seats. Is Estwick or Scott from Barbados in the Top 3? Who got eliminated first? While Kesia has been deemed safe each week, Scott had a little scare when she was eliminated but came back with a purpose to place second in the following week’s challenge. Bajan designer Janelle Forde was eliminated last week.
Crystal’s effort won her a feature in Ocean Style magazine. This is her second win.
Guest judge and editor of Ocean Style, Douglas Gordon, thought her work was “creative, interesting, well constructed and editorial ready”. Equally impressed was the regular judging panel: Keneea Linton-George, host and executive producer of Mission Catwalk; Novia McDonald-Whyte, Jamaica Observer Lifestyle editor; and Carlton Brown, celebrated menswear designer.
Mission Catwalk promises another double elimination soon. Of the remaining seven designers, three are Jamaican (Powell, Janel Jolly and Gregory Williams), two are from Barbados (Estwick and Scott) while Trinidad and Belize have one representative each in Ryan Chan and Rebecca Stirm, respectively.
The series will climax with a grand showdown at Caribbean Fashion Week with the top three designers in June. (PR)
