OVER 90 ASPIRING young cricketers will head back to school next term better prepared to take their game and their teams to the next level.
This follows a week of intensive cricket training at the second annual Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket Camps which took place at the Passage Road Community Centre, the Speightstown playing field and the YMPC cricket grounds.
Scores of boys and girls attended each of the camps which were delivered by trained Kiddy Cricket coaches under the supervision of territorial development officer Robin Parris. Umpires also participated in the teaching, helping to expose the children to the rules of the game.
Parris explained that the camps are intended to nurture and develop the talent identified through the Kiddy Cricket after school coaching program and ensure that the students’ skills remain sharp during the lengthy summer vacation.
He pointed out that this is even more important for the Class 4 students who will be going on to secondary school and hence graduating from the Kiddy Cricket program as it is intended to provide a smooth transition into the WICB’s Grassroots and Under-13 programs.
“The children who took part in the camps are some of our most promising young Kiddy Cricketers who are enthusiastic about going further in the sport. Thanks to Scotiabank, we’ve been able to give them additional technical training and this is good for cricket in general,” said Parris.
Scotiabank marketing manager Amanda Lynch-Foster said the bank was pleased to continue expanding its support of Kiddy Cricket, noting:
“This is the 15th year of the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket program and as we’ve gone along, we’ve worked with the West Indies Cricket Board to enhance the program from year to year. Kiddy Cricket Camp is one such improvement as it allows the children to get training outside of the school year as well. In this way they can prepare for the full Kiddy Cricket program in the school year ahead or for a higher level of cricket at secondary school.” (PR)
