TWENTY-FOUR-YEAR-OLD Krystal Cobham always had her heart set on being an accountant and the petite young woman was comfortably enrolled in a bachelor’s programme at the University of the West Indies when she was thrown head first into the fashion world.
“One Halloween I wanted to dress up as Red Riding Hood but I found I was missing a cape, which is the focus of the costume,” she said. “I asked a friend how to create one and I learned to do it myself.”
With that first enterprise Krystal found herself immersed in the world of design.
“I love Rihanna . . . . I love her way of always staying ahead of the curve and I hate the idea of looking like everyone else,” said Krystal.
When she has completed her degree Krystal plans to enrol in the fashion design programme at the Barbados Community College, where she will hone her skills under expert tutelage and emerge a full-fledged designer with an intimidating sense of personal style and enough drive to make it work.
She hopes to show her work locally as well as regionally with a runway show at internationally-acclaimed Caribbean Fashion Week as her current goal.
