Students who turned up at the Alexandra School after 9:30 a.m yesterday, found the gates closed and were not allowed enter.
The WEEKEND NATION was unable to reach principal, Jeff Broomes, but was told by a source that students had been warned to be at school by 8:30 a.m.
Sergeant Wilma Farley at District E Police stattion confirmed that two patrols went to the school in response to students’ complaints that they had been locked out.
One female student commented: “This is not fair to us, for months now these teachers have been on strike, they have cancelled exams, sent us home early, and because we are late this last day of school, they have us locked out.”
Another student said she was late because her bus had broken down. (CT)

There is no reason good enough that students should be denied entry to school premises during school hours.

It’s time Mr Broomes stop the nonsense, the education of our kids are more important than these artificial time deadlines, what he is in essence creating a monster later on in life, where everyone is in a mad rush to get every where on time, most deaths and accidents occur during “rush hours”, let’s understand the real meaning of an old wise proverb “better late than never”. Mr Broomes we don’t live in a perfect world, every child is not going to make it to school on time, as an old Cawmerian many mornings 4-5 buses passed me filled, that was not my fault, I had no control over that, even though I was at the bus stop 7:30 am on mornings, be understanding and not hard nosed, these kids belong in school even when late, because the “devil” can find work for these kids idle hands and minds outside of school.

Well if this is what the oft called for increased male presence in our education system will bring to it; “Heaven help us all!”

These children were an entire hour late for school and no one sees a problem with this. This is a completely seperate issue. What message are we sending? since when is it okay to be late because the teachers and the principal has ‘issues’? Parents, know when to discipline your kids. My mother always taught us not to get involved and always speak to the neighbour, even if they were having a dispute or argument, and we always were mindful of this, cause the punishment was quite severe.
