League queens Garrison unbeaten

A CHAMPIONSHIP HANGOVER will be the least of Garrison’s worries this season.
Vanessa Reid-Cox had a game-high 19 points, Nikita President added 18 and the defending Wibisco Shirley Girls basketball champs surrendered a mere Ria Ifill basket in their 61-3 thrashing of The Lester Vaughan School in Tuesday’s league encounter at Dayrells Road.
It was the six-time league queens’ second win in as many games, keeping the perennial finalists’ unbeaten mark intact – not that it was ever under threat.
Garrison rattled off the game’s first 34 points without reply before Ifill finally got an unlikely trey to fall late in the second quarter. This was after the hosts stormed out to a 16-0 first-quarter advantage behind the efforts of Reid-Cox and President.
The Garrison girls also put up 16 unanswered in the third quarter as part of closing out the contest on a 27-0 run.
At Waterford, Winmalecia Bowen scored 16 points as title contenders Springer maintained their league lead by registering their third win after outlasting the previously undefeated Combermere 41-37.
Rene Burke added 11 points while Makela Walcott top-scored for the home squad with 19 in a game that was tied at 16 at the break.
St Lucy kept pace with the fellow unbeatens by beating Alexandra 34-10 in Queen Street while Harrison College got their first win of the season behind Shannon Green’s 25 points in a 37-6 home victory over St James. (JM)
