Barbados’ largest telecommunications company, LIME, has taken the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU)?to task for threatening to call a national strike over job redundancies at that company.
The union on Monday called on LIME to withdraw the 97 letters of termination issued to workers by today or face industrial action. On January 2 LIME announced the laying off of 97 workers.
In a press statement LIME?said it regarded the action by the BWU “as an irresponsible approach to a process which has been followed in full and has been ongoing for the past six months, when the Social Partnership clearly states that six weeks is the normal timeframe for such negotiations to be completed”.
LIME also said that “in the midst of a deep recession a national strike is the last thing the country needs when businesses and employees are struggling to maintain jobs”. (JS/PR)
