A NEW Solid Waste Management Act has been drafted and it promises greater enforcement of laws relating to illegal dumping and littering, Environment Minister Dr Denis Lowe promised yesterday.
The minister was speaking after an underwater tour of the island’s West Coast reefs aboard the Atlantis submarines.
The tour, which saw 48 people from various departments in the Ministry of the Environment and Drainage taking advantage of the day-time tour to the island’s seabed, was held as part of the activities to mark World Environment Day yesterday.
Lowe, who acknowledged that one of the problems facing the island’s marine environment was land-based garbage washing into it, said the new act had already been drafted and stiffer penalties for illegal dumping had been addressed.
