Locals buying into hotels

Barbados’ south coast hotel stock is in for a major boost with one large closed property being brought back into operation and another being refurbished.
The dilapidated Sandy Beach Hotel in Worthing, Christ Church, has been bought by a “prominent local hotelier” and will be rehabilitated and put back into operation as a condominium-style hotel, while Amarylis in Hastings, also recently purchased by local interests, will be refurbished in time for the coming winter season.
Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy informed the House of Assembly of these developments Tuesday when he introduced a resolution to compulsorily acquire the Sam Lord’s Castle property in St Philip for a 450-room hotel development.
He also disclosed there were applications to the Barbados Tourism Authority Inc. and the Ministry of Tourism for the construction of “two branded hotels” in the Lower Bay Street, St Michael area. Both hotel projects are part of partnership ventures being led by a local group of investors whose names were not revealed, an indication of the increase in domestic investment in hotels. (GC)
