By Mike King | Thu, February 02, 2012 - 12:05 AM
A man was shot at point blank range on a minibus in full view of several stunned passengers in Pine/Wildey, St Michael, last night.
Alex Romel Samuel, of Jackson, St Michael, was gunned down by an unidentified man, who entered the van somewhere along the Pine East West Boulevard.
The unemployed 30-year-old man, was shot in the chest about 5:40 p.m. on B132 that was en route to Bridgetown.
Police Inspector David Welch told the DAILY NATION the assailant fled in the direction of the Parkinson Memorial School. Welch added that police were making headway in their investigations.
Classes at the nearby University of the West Indies (UWI Open Campus, had to be cancelled.
Samuel was the third recorded murder for 2012. His slaying follows that of Damien Omar Mitchell, 28, who was shot in the head at a football match at the Victor “Gas” Clarke sporting centre in Carrington Village on Monday, the New Year holiday, and the torching of carpenter and former cyclist Michael Jefferson Albert last week at his Country Park Towers home in St Michael.

Comment LinkGov’t must make use of the death penalty for heinous crimes such as these (ignore the “bleeding hearts” who say it’s wrong…send a strong message.

Comment LinkSome had warned Barbados that this present criminal behavior and gun violence was going to hit Barbados with a vengeance. Sadly, there is no consolation in being right. Actually, it demonstrates that WE ALL have failed to seriously address and deal with this issue. Moreover, as long as some of us have the attitude that as long as this gun violence involves “dem other people” these situations like the bus shooting will become a part of the Barbadian landscape. This is gut check time.

Comment LinkI’m neither shock nor surprise at these murders at all. What really shocks and scares the daylights out of me is the slaps on the wrist the judicial system imposes on these vagabonds.I’ve said it here before as long as the British Privy Council dictates to us (Barbados) that keeping murderers on death row longer than five years is inhumane (which is ridiculous) then innocence citizens will continue to die.

Comment LinkThere is no prouder Bajan than me living here in NY. I always brag about how nice, safe and what a paradise Barbados is. However, reading these things is embarrassing and makes us all look bad. These are the things we don’t want to keep happening. First, New Year’s started on the wrong foot and now this. While I don’t know what cause this, I do know we need to get the guns off the street and get back into show what Pride and Industry is all about.

Comment LinkWhen and if caught, will he be given a few years in jail? will be be placed in jail and release only when the person he killed comes back to life, bail, remand, he did what he did in public, will a lawyer argue doubt? Will human rights speak up for him and leave the dead rights people to speak for the man he shot, will a minister say he came from a single parent home thus made a mistake . The excuses above contribute to crime, we are seeing it every day when people say I would kill you and go spend a few years in jail.

Comment LinkTo my Christian brothers & sisters: pray for our beloved country, then ask our great GOD & King, even Jesus Christ, what He wants you to do to assist. When He tells you, just do it, as the Nike commercial urges. If enough of us do this, we will begin to see tangible changes for the better in our beloved Barbados. It’s that simple.

Comment LinkBarbados is just catching up with the times. These acts of blatant violence continue to plague countries all over the world. I can understand people being so shocked as they have never experienced it first hand. The police need to be aware that times are changing and that their technology, means of investigating as well as punishments being given to these criminals need to change to adjust with the times. It’s like the cops are bringing a knife to a gun fight. The government should give the police the tools and training to deal with the sofistcated criminals of today. A quick and harsh declaration of war against this criminal element needs to happen before Bajans become desensitised to random acts of violence.

Comment LinkThe problem here is respect and we have lost it over the years, also cowards who cannot fight with words but with weapons. We have broken all communicative barriers with our youth because of progress; no one have the time to really find out why are these young folks have no feeling to work but you can still find them in the latest trends. We have always had limers on the side of the streets but after a certain age these guys knew they were becoming men and had to find something to do but today it has become normal. Many parents are also to blame for this as they have no time for their children or pay no attention to their needs. Too much influence of American trends is taking over our system and identity of our culture has long been diminished. I hope for the sake of our presents young adults of tomorrow that they find the right path to becoming better and productive men and women of our country and show that they can make a difference only if they fight for their survival in these trying and economic hard times.

When will you put heads together and when can we expect a new bill before Parliament to address the weaknesses in law regarding the death penalty? When will you hear our pleas?

Comment LinkI too agree that we need to reinstate the death penalty. We cannot sit back and let such callous brutality overshadow our little Isle. We have to deter this blatant disregard for life. Bring back the death penalty.
