The American University of Barbados, whose official opening is set for today, can pose serious challenges to the University of the West Indies (UWI) medical school at Cave Hill when it comes to foreign students.

That warning, of sorts, came from Professor Nigel Harris, University of the West Indies Vice Chancellor, who admitted that Barbados’ recent decision to give the green light to an offshore medical school in the country caught him by surprise.

He told the DAILY NATION in New York that when the privately funded medical school, the first of its kind in Barbados but one of several in the Eastern Caribbean, gets going it could present Cave Hill with competition for foreign students.

“That surprised me, frankly,” Harris said of the Freundel Stuart administration’s decision to grant an operating licence to the American University. “The model for the faculty of medicine [at Cave Hill] is one that anticipated getting international students who would be paying full bore for their education. Now to have an international one, an offshore school, there would be a challenge. It does challenge the university’s school at Cave Hill.”

Its about time UWI had some competition. UWI is the pits and is gradually getting worse. May now they will shape up.

Competition is bad? I don’t know. Just asking… Perhaps it might make for a better product in both cases. I doan know. Wha you think?

They need competion.  Perhaps that will help them get their ‘act’ together.

This opening of the American University, is great for Barbados and the region. For those students, who find it hard to get student visas to study abroad. This institution will continue the legacy of Barbados being a place of great education.
This is not competition for the UWI, it enhances the whole education product. Those who make silly statements that it is competition, better get a grip of the era of Globalization in the market place. We need the income that these institution will bring as well. By the way, i did not hear them say that building a private hospital or medical facility in Barbados, is competition to the QEH?
You may note that professor Nigel Harris, did not state what he is afraid of. He just made a blanket statement, based on pure emotion. The Professor should be instead looking for ways to enhance the UWI program, and to seek outjoint project with the Amercan University, so as to address the finacial issues of the UWI.

Is this building tied into the Bridgetown sewage treatment plant?  Or will this place be dumping potentially hazardous waste into a suckwell in the ground?
