Men rap AG over comments

Men rap AG over comments MESA chairman Ralph Boyce. (FP)

The Men’s Educational Support Association (MESA) has thrown its support behind its chairman, under attack by Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite for suggesting that every child in Barbados should undergo DNA testing at birth.

A MESA Press release Friday night said its members “expressed dissatisfaction and discontent with the criticism levelled at the chairman, Mr [Ralph] Boyce by the Attorney General, particularly where he referred to him as ‘some character’”.

It added: “The men considered that the Attorney General was ‘out of line’ and that his unwarranted and harsh criticism was an attack on MESA and on men generally.”

MESA adopted this position at its annual general meeting, held at The St Michael School, Martindales Road, St Michael, last month. (JS)

I thought it was rather distasteful for The Attorney General to be be referring to anyone in a public forum as "that character", and it is made worse when that person is the head of a National organization.I will wait and see if he will refer to the head of the Women's body as "that woman" when a statement is made that he doesn't agree with. Although not agreeing with the testing of all babies at birth, i do agree that it is a very, very important issue for men.

I guess that the AG could have been a bit more respectful when referring to the gentleman but come on a DNA test for every child born in Barbados. I wonder who will pay for the testing. Surely if a man has doubts as to whether or not a child is his then he should have the right to seek testing before he provides financial support.

I think the Minister owes Mr Boyce an apology. I will wait to see because elections are over. Mr Boyce has for years been bright and so forward thinking, light years ahead of the Minister. (Ask the older BPWCCU about some of his recommendations moons ago when were much poorer, like owning a supermarket, gas station, purchasing lawn equipment to rent to members at a minimal fee). No Mr Minister, those comments make you either shallow or you were just grandstanding. Sometimes what comes out of the mouth can be costly. Please do apologise. Mr Minister. Understand how powerful and what a saving grace DNA can be at that stage. It is not only about maintenance and paternity issues which are extremely important too, it is also about uncovering heridatary health issues; early childhood health issues, opening up research in diseases pertaining to this and other races; diseases prone to our geographic location: establishing a good useful database for the fight against criminal activity AND MORE. Say that it may beyond our reach now in terms of time and resources, Mr Minister, but don't kick a useful idea, by a good citizen to the curb this way.

@Monica Wilkinson. Why does every thing has to come done to costs? If something is wanted /needed, then the cost will not matter. Maybe by then the cost would nave been reduced.
How about the married men? Will they ask for a test also before they provide financial support?
If the testing is done then some children may get to meet their real (biological) fathers.
We might also even have our own version of the "Maury Show".

A DNA database should only be kept on convicted criminals not innocent citizens. "some character" was a poor choice of words & the AG should apologise for that. But not for anything else.
