Mother defends beating daughter

Karen Jordan and her daughter, 14, are not in the least bit concerned about the video that was posted on social media showing Karen beating her daughter about the body with a piece of wood. (Picture by Maria Bradshaw.)

A VIDEO of a mother inflicting a severe beating on her young daughter with a two-by-four plank in front of several onlookers has rubbed many Barbadians  the wrong way.

The video went viral on several social media websites and resulted in people calling for the matter to be investigated by the Child Care Board while accusing the mother of gross child abuse.

But speaking to the DAILY NATION yesterday with her smiling daughter at her side, mother Karen Jordan said she did not believe she went overboard with her actions.

She also said she did not care what anyone thought about the  beating.

I think she went Overboard. No Child deserves that kind of Discipline!

She going to care when the police charge her.

Anyone that saw the video without knowing the reason would have come to one conclusion: this mother is either crazy or completely loss all control if she could inflict such cruelty on a child regardless of whatever caused the provocation. But is her reason, what ever the reason, justified to do her daughter so badly in presence of onlookers right in the public's eye. Hell NO! You were wrong lady on all accounts. You need parental and psychological help because your actions base on what you did in the video makes you look completely mad. You and your daughter need some serious help of the counseling kind.

I viewed this video , and if she does not care what anyone thinks of the beating then it is up to the criminal law courts to make that decision on if someone cares or not

They both dont know any better, the mother probably grew up with the same treatment and the daughter may do the same to her children.

It is a cultural plague, a backlash of slavery, lots of work needs to be done with parenting and more mental health workers education and workers are needed.

You should be arrested! Learn to talk to you child like a human being first!

She does not care because in our society the authorities have led many parents to believe they can do whatever they please with their children.

You got to be kidding me!
How can anybody look at another human being and beat them with a 2x4 - not even hit once - but beat!! Totally outrageous! A young mother looks into the Nation’s camera and smiles and says she doesn’t care what nobody thinks about the beating - This is because cops are not at her door representing her daughter as they should and charging her with assault and abuse of a minor…. Is she telling her daughter that she is beating her because she loves her? What did this child do to warrant such wrath? .... This is one of the reasons why society is so messed up - we solve problems with violence...Stop people, it's the 21st century - there are other ways of getting through to our kids... Stop saying that our parents did this and we are no worse for it… our parents did these things because they were not exposed to the information we have today. They were taught to spare not the rod and spoil the child and even so yesteryear parents were not beating their kids with 2x4’s …it was pea tree whips… and you were not beaten to be taken to a doctor… I am sure that this kid is still smarting from the blows she got from “mommy Dearest”. Hopefully this child does not grow up to believe that violence is an acceptable way of life. In the school yard or in her marriage. 2x4’s are to build houses – not to build/wreck lives…. …

Physically disciplining a youngster is one thing, abuse is another. But before we jump to conclusions, let us wait to hear the conclusion of the whole matter. Let us wait to see if the authorities will see fit to take action against the mother.

Wisdom listens carefully, and answers slowly. A hasty response is neither intelligent nor wise - it is foolish and shameful. Comprehending accurately and answering rightly is far more important than answering quickly.

We have two ears to hear, but only one mouth to speak. Let these proportions dictate our emphasis. We should be "swift to hear, and slow to speak." We should make sure that we know every situation fully before making a judgment or giving an answer.

Well, since this mother is happy to tell the world she does not care, then we, as responsible citizens of society have to show that we do. Her daughter is underaged and does not know any better, because she loves her mother...Every child does, unconditionally! It is incumbent upon the police, then, to pay a visit to this woman before she ends this child's life, because next time it might be something worse than a two by four. The Child Welfare authorities MUST step in and charge this woman with abuse of a minor.

I haven't viewed the video as yet...but WOW! Something is wrong with this picture. What did this girl do to deserve this base reprimand?

Beatings in the homes, beatings in the are our young people fearing? Then its onto domestic violence....which is "accepted" as the norm. Ever wonder why??

I was shocked to learn that corporal punishment was still given at secondary schools. Beatings with all manner of objects!!! What kind of madness is this??

It is a matter that needs to be looked into by the Ministry of Education immediately before it gets out on YouTube and embarrrasses a lot of folk!
Beatings in homes and schools need to be looked into.

Beatings from your parents
Beatings from 'The Head'
Beatings til yah maime
Beatins til yah dead

This is the problem with our society today. This whole idea of being politically correct. I am not a politician so the term means nothing to me. This woman should be commended. She cares enough to cut her child's butt when it is called for.The 2x4 was extreme though. Maybe if alot more parents followed suit there wouldn't be all these robberies everyday in Barbados. Then I hear these shrinks on the radio talking bout it not not a proper way to punish your children. So what, you think putting them on "time out" works? It was good enough for most Bajans reading this and all Bajans before them. It's good enough now.

I am sorry Karen Jordan, there is absolutely no defending of your deplorable behaviour and poor example as a parent. Under no circumstances should any child be hit with a 2 X 4. The fact that you "did not care what anyone thought" and show zero remorse says everything that we need to know about you. By the way, if you happen to leave these shores and travel to North America with your daughter please do not try this. A prison sentence will be guaranteed. You need to request assistance and counselling from an appropriate authority about how to raise children. Remember, any healthy persons in the right age group can produce children but not everyone can raise them. You need to learn about love, nurturing, guidance, leading by example, tough love and appropriate discipline. Please seek help and smarten up before we have to read about another teenaged suicide or run-away. Let us not lose another one through the cracks. LB.

some one needs to tell her that she could still be prosecuted before a court of law for her actions so whether her and her daughter is all smiley or not the video which also has audio speaks for it self.and if nothing is done about this by the law then i guess we all would know where we r going as a nation

So Ms. Jordan does not feel that she went overboard and does not care about what others think. In other words, she is pleased with her actions. I wonder if she cares about her 14 year old facing her school friends and the taunting that she will receive from them. What a disgusting and deplorable situation! I am ashamed to read this and more ashamed that visitors and other non-Bajans will be reading it. Very poor show, Karen Jordan. Nigel D.

For all you Christians that are applauding this woman's barbaric behavior, are you sorry Jesus didn't beat the crap out of you with a 2x4 every time you messed up?

I know that some Neanderthals applaud this woman's public humiliation and brutalization of her daughter, but I also understand the legacy of slavery. I understand that it still wraps its ugly tentacles around us and refuses to let go. That in the year of our Lord 2013 a woman smiles broadly in a newspaper and shows no remorse for physically brutalizing her child boggles my mind. I will watch and see how the authorities respond.

Granted, she might be trying to steer her daughter from a pit, but she went about it the WRONG WAY. She is a disgrace to motherhood. Children that are starved for physical affection from parents can and often find whatever affection they can -- good or bad.

' Girl Beaten With Piece Of Wood'

The amount of [bad words] that this woman vomitted during her assault on her daughter is deplorable. What a parent! And the crowd was wooing her on!
