Dear Christine,
I’LL BE VERY HAPPY if you can help my family. I am 18 years old and have a job which helps the family to survive. However, we are seeing things really difficult at the moment.
My mom spent time in prison for a crime and has never been able to find a job since her release. As a result, things are not good for my siblings and me.
To help us, my mom does things I wish she would not have to do.
The Welfare Department gives us $33 a week, but as you would imagine, that does not go a long way. What I am really asking for is a push start. I am not asking for help on a long-term basis. Our rent is in arrears and some bills need paying.
I am trying my best with the weekly wages I receive. I don’t even need cash in hand; just to have our arrears of $2 500 or so paid off. I want to see my family out of this situation.
My mom went to her constituency representative, but still there is no other help. Please see what help you can get for us in this our time of need.
We need that push start. I expect another job soon, which will help my family, but right now we are in bind.
Please help us.
– HELP
Dear HELP,
I always appreciate letters from readers who make it clear that they are in a bind and need help just for the moment.
It is sad that your mom has had to do those things you’ve told me about to get money to feed her family – things which I have not printed.
I agree that $33 a week cannot go very far – and that given your challenge in trying to help your family, it must also be very hard on you.
I am printing your letter with the hope that some kind-hearted person would be willing to lend assistance in some way.
In fact, I would encourage readers to help if they can.
I hope I’ll have some good news for you and your family in a few days’ time.
CHRISTINE
