Pedestrians will be stepping out on firmer footing with the completion of a footbridge at Welchman Hall, St Thomas. Work started on the project Tuesday and is expected to be complete by next Monday.

At present a crane and other heavy equipment have blocked the road and buses and general traffic have been diverted through Vault Road and Sturges to allow construction. One lane will be opened for traffic next week.

Roland Grant, civil engineer of Rayside Construction Company Limited, said workmen were installing the structural beams. He also said there was no footbridge in place before and pedestrians had to walk in the road so the bridge will make it safer for them to travel.

The footpath, most of which is already completed, runs from Holy Innocents to the entrance of Harrison’s Cave. A smaller footbridge is also to be installed at Allen View. (LK)
