The head of the island’s largest trade union has said no way to a controversial ten per cent pay cut proposal made by businessman Andrew Bynoe.

Barbados Workers’ Union general secretary Sir Roy Trotman contended yesterday that Bynoe’s proposal was off target and not well thought through.

He said such a move would result in “a spiralling down of conditions”.

“If we were to reduce the earnings of the workforce of Barbados by ten per cent as Mr Bynoe would dictate, then we’re not only talking to people like Andrew Bynoe or possibly myself who might be able, with a squeeze, to manage on that, but we’re talking about shop assistants who work for $5 an hour . . . . We’re talking about security guards who get paid $4.50 an hour and there may be some of them getting enslaved for less than that,” Sir Roy said at a press conference yesterday.
