No lapse in safety, says Rally Club

The Barbados Rally Club (BRC) is convinced there was no lapse in its security or crowd control protocol during the Shakedown Stages Rally in St John, when two men were struck by a high-speed vehicle and hospitalized with serious injuries.

But the club will still reassess every safety procedure within the next month, as it prepares for its biggest event of 2012, the Sol Rally Barbados on June 9 and 10.

Veteran journalist Trevor Thorpe and Island Constable Sam Hackett were both struck during the event by a vehicle at high speed and hospitalized Sunday night, but released yesterday morning. Luckily, their injuries were not deemed life threatening.

“This was a pure, unadulterated accident. We all know motor sport is dangerous and understand the risks, but we had everything in place in terms of marshals, barricades, ambulances, police and crowd control. But in motor sport something like this could still happen any time,” BRC’s public relations officer Neil Barnard told the DAILY NATION yesterday.
