A businessman is taking legal action to prevent the Government from compulsorily acquiring a portion of his land to give to his competitor.
Brian Cozier, whose company owns 7.5 acres of industrially zoned land at Vaucluse, St Thomas, which is used to recycle metal for export, told the WEEKEND NATION yesterday he was shocked when he saw a newspaper advertisement on August 21, announcing that Government was seeking to acquire a portion of his land for “environmental protection”.
He said he has discovered that the land is to be utilized by his competitor Paul Bynoe of B’s Recycling Plant at Cane Garden, St Thomas, for the relocation of his recycling business.
Cozier, who owns Scrap Man Metal Recycling Plant located at Vaucluse, said when late Prime Minister David Thompson and other Government officials announced last year that the land at Vaucluse was being developed for Bynoe’s recycling plant, he thought they were referring to land east of his, which is owned by Government and occupied by the Mangrove Waste Transfer Station.

Oh interesting. I intend to follow this case closely. I must say good for you Mr.Cozier in fighting for your rights.. If you run out of options you can try suing the government before the O.A.S. As it seems they have given that body so much power over Barbados.
IMHO I don’t believe this government knows what compulsive acquisition law was created for. It is for instances for example, if Government buys up large swaths of land for a highway, and lets say the last- person holding up the highway project knows the government will buy for any price so they set the price of their half acre (in the direct path for the highway) at say $60 million dollars. The government then could say, the person is trying to extort the situation. Anyway, compulsive acquisition isn’t for everytime a government disregard protecting the rights of private citizens rights and it decides to refuses to even start negotiating with persons over the price for their property. I would also write to Queen Elizabeth II and inform her that this government is doing crap. According to Section 63 of the Barbados Constitution she hold full executive authority of the Government of Barbados. She’s even higher than the Governor General… She hasn’t been involved in Barbados politics, she keeps quiet and is probably the last office (besides the G.G.) which functions correctly.
