Not yet! Hamilton Lashley. (FP)

By Dawne Parris | Sun, August 12, 2012 - 12:08 AM

Soon-to-be-retired Democratic Labour Party (DLP) parliamentarian Hamilton Lashley says Prime Minister Freundel Stuart should wait until next February to send Barbadians to the polls.

Doing it too soon, he said, would be “political suicide”.

Although he will not face the electorate, having just announced his decision to retire from active politics after 19 years, Lashley told the SUNDAY SUN that the DLP would have a better chance of winning a second term if the poll was held later rather than sooner.

The next election is constitutionally due by April 2013, but Stuart has not yet disclosed when it will be held.

I notice that Government is debushing
cleaning up the island's roadways
fixing pot-holes given any dry spell after the rains that pop them open far too easily
and other appearance-based improvements.

Well done, I say.
That is the sort of thing that wins elections:
Things like road markings and
replacing burnt-our traffic light bulbs.
In other words get the Ministry at the Pine WORKING for their salaries!

MY tax dollar at work...I don't know about yours!

This man was never any mover and shaker in Barbados politics and the people are tired of his two sided approach. At least he smart enough to know that his brand of politics no longer acceptable. He should keep his mouth shut and then go off quietly into his sunset of retirement.

It's unfortunate that governance has now become about winning the next election and not doing what's best for the country. Our politicians seem blinded to the fact that investment has dropped to an all time low. Investors will not put a cent in Barbados until there's a new government in place for the next five years, be that government formed by a B or D majority.
So it's really in the country's best interest to call the elections now and restore some level of confidence to get the country moving again. Whatever the Barbadian people decide will be the order of the day for the next political term (however long that maybe) in our democracy.
Therefore it's not about winning the next election...the focus should be on restoring confidence.
