THE NATIONAL UNION of Public Workers (NUPW) is not negotiating jointly with the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU), and as far as it is concerned, meetings held recently with the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance were not officially “joint”.
“I did not take those two meetings [last week] as any precursor to any joint anything!” NUPW president Walter Maloney told the DAILY NATION yesterday.
Stating in no uncertain terms that no one could speak on the NUPW’s behalf but its president or general secretary, Maloney declared: “I don’t want the perception out there that anybody got on a white horse and saved the day.”
He said that, as far as he knew, the NUPW was the lone trade union that had sent a list of proposals to the Government, and no one else should be leading any discussion with Government on them.
“There was never any negotiating jointly with the BWU. We negotiate ourselves on behalf of our members. I want people to understand that nobody speaks on behalf of the NUPW but the general secretary and the president.
