Obama win no match at all

Obama win no match at all Opposition leader Owen Arthur (FP)

Fri, November 09, 2012 - 10:15 AM

LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION OWEN ARTHUR sees United States president Barack Obama’s re-election as a welcome triumph, but dismissed any belief that it could be replicated by the Barbados Government.

Arthur told the WEEKEND NATION Wednesday that one should “certainly not” draw parallels between Barbados and the fact that the American public had shown confidence in its incumbent government despite recessionary woes including high debt, unemployment and a recurring deficit.

“In Obama’s case, he has actually started to make things better,” Arthur said. “In our case, it’s going from crisis to calamity. In our instance, there is no programme by the Government to turn the economy around, and when we try to speak to a programme, people are putting all kinds of bogeymen in the way.”

He noted, however, that while Obama’s re-election was greatly welcomed, he hoped it would herald a stronger relationship between the United States and the Caribbean and between the United States and the hemisphere.  (RJ)
