Construction is set to begin next week of an enclosed and temperature-controlled fish packaging plant at the Bridgetown Fisheries Complex.
Market manager for the Bridgetown complex, Sherlock King, said the facility was necessary in order to meet international regulations for a facility that processes fish for export.
King said that most of the fish coming into Barbados came to the Bridgetown complex, where most fish packaging for export took place, but that was being done in an open and uncovered area.
He said that to ensure the safest and best quality product for customers there would be strict adherence to dress and hygiene standards as well as restricted access to limit contamination from the environment and pests. (LK)
