PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – The retrial of former prime minister Basdeo Panday on charges of failing to declare a London bank account to the Integrity Commission will begin on June 13.
Panday, 78, who is being represented by his daughter, Mickela Panday, faces three charges of knowingly failing to declare the London bank account to the Integrity Commission in 1997, 1998 and 1999, in contravention of the Integrity in Public Life Act.
In March 2006, Panday went on trial before then chief magistrate Sherman McNicolls who found him guilty and sentenced him to a two-year prison term.
But he appealed the conviction and on March 20, 2007, the Court of Appeal quashed the conviction based on the possibility that he may not have received a fair trial.
Panday served as prime minister from 1995-2001. (CMC)
