THE ONGOING IMPASSE at Alexandra School has led to parents requesting information about transfers.

This was revealed yesterday by president of the Alexandra Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), Carl Benskin, who said the patience of PTA members was wearing thin as the bulk of students had not had formal tuition since the teachers’ strike began almost two weeks ago.

“[Parents] are very agitated. Our children are still not being taught. We want our children to be taught. Let’s get our children taught. All like now somebody should be in the classroom,” said Benskin.

Pressed on the matter of the requests for transfers, he said he could not say exactly how many calls he had received, but he described the situation as “widespread” at the school which has a roll of over 800 students. (KJ\SP)

Indeed. This business has been going on too long. All now I do not understand what the issues are. All I know is that the children are not being taught. Not good… not good at all.

Mr. Broomes and his staff have collectively destroyed the reputation of a good school. Not only are parents requesting transfers, but I am sure parents whose children are sitting the 11 plus will try their best to avoid Alexandra as a choice if they can help it.

Both the principals and the teachers have a part in what has happened. They should all be mature enough to admit their culpability so they can work together towards damage control, and eventually, progress.

The request by parents for a transfer seems like a good one to me even if it is temporary until the dispute is settled. Create a couple of classrooms at a number of schools with temporary teachers.  What about using UWI accommodation as a school for some of the students, the ones whose teachers are on strike.  Something has to be done while this problem is solved. The union’s position seems to start with the removal of the Principal.  Do they honestly believe that this is the right position to take from the outset of the dispute.

Th best result for all parties involved is that Principal and teachers are Alexandra’s should be reassigned to other schools or other roles with in the education sector. None of them in my view have set the type of example I would wish my son to follow.

Of course, parents and students are starting to become concerned and hence impatient. What will it take to light a fire under the collective seats of the decision makers? The time has come to make a decision, even if it is not the most popular, and has to be re-visited later. Forget the politics. Most people that I chat with are seeing a decision quite clearly: 1 - Transfer and re-train the teachers who are “offending Adams”. 2 - Have a Ministry official “shadow” the Principal to oversee the re-settling process and to discreetly ensure adequate sensitivity on his part. 3 - Re-visit the situation periodically to ensure long-term viability. What could be more simple, we don’t need a rocket scientist. Now, please get on with it and let the students learn again. LB.
