Pastor against males as just sperm donors

A LOCAL PASTOR is against what he considers an emerging trend of financially secure women treating men as mere sperm-donors.
Senior Pastor Clayton Springer of the Wesleyan Holiness Church spoke about the trend while delivering the sermon during a service yesterday marking the Barbados Family Planning Association’s 57th anniversary.
He said he was concerned about “the deliberate choice by an increasing number of professional women to have a child by use of a male as a sperm-donor but who refuses to allow any paternal relationship to be developed with the child”.
He said that while a woman might be equipped with the relevant “financial material” to raise a child, he would question her wisdom in ignoring the significance of the male figure in that child’s life.
This position would pose problems for “a child who yearns for a paternal relationship and is ignored because of this so-called independence of a woman”, he told the gathering at the Carrington Wesleyan Holiness Church in Welches, St Michael.
“Even where males exploit that situation and enjoy the pleasure of having scored the “bullseye” and walk away without the responsibility of parenting that child, the situation is fraught with emotional and psychological pain for the child of that carnal encounter,” he said.
Springer pleaded with people to refrain from the practice.
He also knocked the belief that “male significance resided in the number of women he can take to bed and/or impregnate”.
Springer said: “The church will not resile, retreat from, nor recant from its time-tested position that a child needs the complete positive input of both mother and father for well-rounded personality development.
“Differing and seemingly intractable practices do not change the divine writ for family life.” (AH)
