Payne joins chorus for death penalty

Mon, September 06, 2010 - 12:00 AM

CHAIRMAN of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP), George Payne, has joined many Barbadians in calling for the return of the death penalty.

Payne, speaking yesterday at an annual general meeting of the BLP’s Women’s League at BLP headquarters in Roebuck Street, The City, said the sentence should be carried out if the offenders were found guilty.

“I believe we all empathise and sympathise and are in bereavement with the families of those persons who lost their lives in Tudor Street.

“On occasions like this, we get a little emotional and like to think that something drastic should be done, but I think this is one situation where I would side with the majority of Barbadians in saying that I believe the question of the death penalty should be looked at,” he said.

Payne, referring to the events of last Friday when robbers set clothing store Campus Trendz on fire, killing six young women, said he was speaking as an individual and not on behalf of the BLP as he was unsure what party members’ views were. (CA)

That is all hot air and politics. We all know that since the Pratt and Morgan ruling lawyers have been having casese adjourned dare I say unecessarily and more so we recently heard the AG talk of some International convention that will also have a negative impact on hangings as well as he as recently as 2 days ago said it is not the solution to our social problems.Come George we are educated now!!!!

Forget about the politicians, let us the people make it happen. For the longest time I have been saying we need to reintroduce the death penalty in Barbados for certain crimes.Their are defenses that lawyers can used when certain kinds of murders are committed. Self defense, Insanity, Murder of passion etc, The people of Barbados is not asking for the hangman’s noose to be used willy nilly. we are asking that it be used in certain heinous crimes

To the BLP Chairman George Payne, Sir, no disrespect to you,but I hope that you are not using the death of these young women as political pawns. You said that you were speaking as an individual and not on behalf of the BLP. You are entitled to your personal opinion of course, but as a member your views will reflect on the said party and you will be quoted as such.
You should have kept your views to yourself for the time being, at least until you had weighed up the pros and cons of bringing back hanging; following that, you should then have had discussions with not only your leader and fellow members, but also with the opposition party in the correct arena and not publicly.

When it comes to such drastic measures and such important decisions as bringing back hanging, you cannot speak willy-nilly, especially where there could be serious implications.
Once you fire off a verbal bullet you cannot take it back. A man in your position must be cautious in the things you say and do.
You represent the BLP and so you should take your cue from your leader especially on matters such as these.

Yogi NI, you said, “Forget about the politicians, let us the people make it happen”. Are you calling for anarchy? All countries need to have some form of political system in place. There MUST be order. Can you imagine a country without such? Barbados is a democracy in which you are entitled to vote, remove the powers that be and what do you think will happen? Think on…

Mr.George Payne,I will vote for you or any party that will be tough on crime and if the death penalty is to be used so be it. Here in the US any politician that don`t say how he will deal with the criminals, they would not have an easy time
of getting elected.I hope the BLP makes crime and the death penalty one of their main issues. I saw this kind
of behavior coming because the courts were not tough with people that were found
guilty of some of the most vicious crimes in the past. I could mention some such as the Canadians, the School teacher, the woman that was chopped up by her ex
that was in hiding until he
found her, because a person
was not convicted on the murder charge or serious bodily harn, this don`t mean that the sentence could not be 15 to 20 yrs.
