Paynes Bay beach access being blocked

Residents at Payne’s Bay are hopping mad over what they see as a move to hinder beach access to one of the most popular open windows to the sea.
The arrival of a Bobcat and a huge truck, almost blocking the entrance, fuelled calls to the DAILY NATION from several beach operators, who said this was the second time in recent years that one of the nearby homeowners had tried to block the entrance.
As the operators vented their anger over the “pending closure”, tour guides dropped off over 150 tourists, who utilised the same path to gain access to the beach services. Sources said the pathway was not a National Conservation Commission-designated beach path.
“Look at all these tourists coming through here. Everyone uses this pathway to get to the beach, and now he come from all overseas to want to block this path,” said one irate beach operator.
The path, which is located next to the St James Condominiums, is one of two, but the other one is extremely small and those who use it have to squeeze through. Outside of those, the other entrance to the beach in that area is located about 100 metres away, near to The Sands.
“He doesn’t even live here, but yet every time he comes to the island he is looking for trouble,” another operator said as he surveyed the three-foot trench that now exposed badly damaged tree roots.
Timothy Moore, a fisherman who has lived in the area for over 50 years, said: “Years ago he tried to block the entrance from the top. Now here again he is trying to block it from the bottom.
“This can’t be right. This is the only access that everyone uses down here. If an ambulance needs to get to the beach this is where they come, when we catch fish or
Continued on next page.when we need to haul up boats this is where we bring them through, so that can’t work. He can’t expect to come here and block off this entrance, it is totally unfair,” he lamented.
Glass bottom boat operator Ryan Blackett said he was not pleased about the situation either.
“I have my kids to feed and rent to pay. It can’t be fair for him to come all the way from overseas to make people here uncomfortable and to put us in a position to lose business. This is our livelihood that he is dealing with,” he stated.
Dug trench
The Bobcat operator who had dug the trench told the NATION that he was told to “dig a trench from the wall to the beginning of the side of the walkway, and that’s exactly what I did”.
However, with one cruise ship in the port yesterday, unsuspecting tour guides and tourists flocked to the area to get their fill of sun, sea and sand, while enjoying the glass bottom boat tours and jet ski rides.
When contacted, Chief Town Planner Mark Cummins said he could not comment since he was unaware of the situation. (CT)

Comment LinkBarbados wake up! This is our country and anyone residing here (or wishing to do so) must abide by and RESPECT local laws and traditions, as would be expected when one of us was to move to their country. In my opinion an expression of common courtesy towards your host.
NO ONE living outside of OUR beloved Barbados has the right to impair access to a local beach that is also traditionally (by the way),a popular spot for tourists and Bajans alike. This kind of behaviour with our Bajan heritage is unacceptable and not to be tolerated.
I’m curious to know what
Chief Town Planner Mark Cummins has comment to this situation now that he is “aware” of it. It is HIs job to look after and protect Barbadian interests where necessary. After all, whose votes got him elected?
The Nation reporters need to keep asking uncomfortable questions and I’ll be looking forward to reading the answers right here.

Comment LinkALL land in Barbados belongs to the Crown and can be compulsorily acquired in the interests of the common good. Track down dem politicians who are so readily available when dem want a vote and let dem do something about preserving the access. Dem is the ONLY ones that can have a LEGAL and PERMANENT solution to this. Go get them! Dah beach is mine! Love yuh Gabberts!

Comment LinkWhat I can’t understand is how Europeans/Americans/Asians and other people from ouside Barbados can come and own property and aren’t even citizens. Stop this carziness. What is wrong with these money hungry politicians. Its like they’re selling their souls (culture) for a dollar and what a high price they’re paying.

Comment LinkHe doesn’t even live here.
Tell these visitors that they are in Barbados and they better allow Barbadians access to their beach or get out and take their supremacist attitude from whence they came.

Comment LinkEven though I’m sadden by such occurrences, often times there’s just that much glee. Just a little. Why? Because, you see your suv’s and a big house somewhere;you see your selves having arrived. My people, unless your minds keep pace with your physical gains, you’ll be setting yourselves up for a failure. Ever wonder why the powers that be don’t respect you?

Comment LinkThis has got to stop. They Blocked our scenic view at the top of Batt’s Rock, they blocked us at sunset crest, they blocked us in Prospect, The garden, Road view, and now Payne’s Bay. Back in the 1980’s, the local operators had to fight down second street with this same problem.
The people of these villages, must fight against this social injustice. They agitate, educate and organize resistance to these injustices, that continue destroy their livelihoods. Back in the day, Austin Husbands would have been there to help in the fight, because he had an interest with his speed boat. Where is he now? Down at sixmens this same thing. Frank Gilkes out there fighting it alone. Where is the leadership, from our representatives?
This has got to stop in this country. The entire west coast have been colonized, once more. Now we are like the Palestinians in the Gaza.
THIS GAZANIZATION OF OUR COASTS MUST END, AND NOW.

Comment Linkbajans have to stand up and claim back their land where the older generation work for nothing to build. You couldnt go to his country and do that so why is these people with money coming in and buying all the beach properties and the government letting it happen, should be stipulations when they buy the land, access to any beach should be a right, bajans work hard to put barbados where it is.

Comment LinkIf this is a public access, then this person…whoever he is and whatever his reason, must NOT be allowed to get away with this, it is immaterial how many other access points there are to the beach, the issue here is that once one individual is allowed and get away with it, a precedence has been established and everyone will be flouting the law and blocking up beach access. This practice should be stamped out now with harsh penalties

Comment LinkI am amazed at the number of times these types of situations have raised they ugly heads. I find it very discomforting to see, and hear that my people, bred and born in Barbados should be denied access to beaches that they, and they fore parents have traverse all they lives are now being threatened by “Johnny come lately” inconsiderate indivisuals who want to do to Barbadians what they are not, or were not allowed to do in they former place of abode.
Where are the people you voted for Paynes Bay folk? Why are they allowing this to happen? You must, and i stress “must"not,or cannot sit idly back and let this happen to you.
This is our paradise and no forein presence should ever be allowed to deny us of it.

Comment LinkThe question is, is it his land? I hate that the west coast is being built up the way it is BUT if the land belongs to him then surely he has the right to do what he wants. If, however, it is a public access, then he has no right whatsoever and needs to back off!
Did anyone ask that question?

Comment LinkThe lyrics of the National Anthem needs to be changed to"These fields and hills beyond recall are not our very own.We sold our birthright left and right, our politicians gave up the fight. We are attacked from every side.”
Sometimes civil disobedience is warranted.

Comment LinkBy law even if a person owns beachfront property they have to provide access to the locals. It seems that these foreigners think they are bigger than the law. Why? Because it is not really enforced.
It goes even further than this. Foreigners should not even be able to own land in Barbados unless they become citizens or are married to a citizen.
