Pitch Perfect could do no wrong at the Barbados Golf Club (BGC) on Sunday.
The four-woman team comprising Lynn DeCambra-Mcleod, Angela Simpson, Jacqui McDermott and Monica Morrow won the inaugural Ladies New Year Scramble Golf Tournament, which took place at the BGC’s Durants course.
The quartet’s score of 70 was good enough for first prize, relegating the Sweet Spots of Julia Stephenson, Claire Boucher, Alison Rimple and Lois Wharram into second position with a score of 73.
The director of the BGC, Roddy Carr, expressed his delight at the success of the tournament which featured 40 beginner female golfers ranging in ages from 11 to 69.
He said that the event was the first ever of its kind in Barbados and he was hoping to make it an annual one.
Along with being on the winning team, Mcdermott, who is also a member of the Society for the Promotion of Women’s Golf, told NATIONSPORT that it was a fun-filled event which garnered high praise from the competitors.
“It was really good fun and the atmosphere was wonderful,” she exclaimed.
“Sometimes women feel like the minority when they are playing golf, so it’s good to feel like the majority for a change.”
Simpson praised the concept behind the competition, explaining that with a field containing women rookies only made the environment much more relaxing.
“It felt good just playing with women for a change.
“I’ve never seen so many women on the golf course, and I really enjoyed it because everyone was on the same level and it took the pressure off,” she maintained.
DeCambra-McLeod, who was captain of the winning side, said the tournament was a very good idea to attract females to the sport.
She said that usually beginners were shy to play in competitions which included seasoned golfers.
“When tournaments are held there are usually only three or four women who participate because they don’t want to be embarrassed by the better players.
“This competition is exactly what they need, where they can come out, play golf and have fun, without worrying about who is watching them,” DeCambra-McLeod said.
Stephenson also won a prize for the longest drive, while Penny Rattle copped the prize for closest to the pin and Simpson was adjudged the best dressed golfer.
