Tough love is good, and today’s children need it, says an Anglican cleric.
Against a backdrop of some children setting rules and dictating what happens in their household, rector of St Luke’s Church, Reverend John Rogers, is calling for more monitoring and taking of firm decisions.
Speaking at a service for the Rights Of The Child yesterday morning, Rogers said many of the adults present did not reach where they were because they got everything they wanted, but because of tough love. He said they had to learn sacrifice, to separate their wants from their needs and that everything they wanted was not good for them.
“So even in September parents have a wonderful opportunity. Perhaps you’re trying to make the decision on whether to buy the Northface bag or the other bag . . . .Your children don’t need a Northface bag.
“Many of the brilliant people in our society went to school carrying a sugar bag that was knitted at home. You don’t need that. Sometimes those excesses, those great wants that our children have, are cries: ‘Lord, save your child’,” he said, as he issued a challenge for members of the committee for monitoring the Rights Of The Child and the congregation to focus upon Christ.
