QEH talks deadlock

QEH talks deadlock Rev. Guy Hewitt

Wed, August 18, 2010 - 12:05 AM

BARBADOS can brace itself for a protracted dispute between the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) board and the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners (BAMP), after talks between the parties broke down yesterday.
At the end of the fruitless two-and-a-half-hour dialogue, mainly on contractual issues, QEH chairman Reverend Guy Hewitt said BAMP had acted in “absolute bad faith”, and referred to yesterday as one of the most disappointing days in his life.
BAMP, which earlier in the day suspended industrial action at the QEH, polyclinics, the Psychiatric Hospital, Geriatric Hospital and district hospitals, said it had been done to facilitate a proposed meeting with Minister of Health Donville Inniss and the hospital board.
Hewitt told the MIDWEEK NATION last night that some elements of BAMP had been self-serving and might have a political agenda.
“The talks with BAMP broke down because the board realised at the end of them that BAMP was operating in very bad faith,” he said.
“It has become clear that they are pushing an agenda to serve their professional interests . . . . They have demonstrated absolute bad faith in terms of following normal industrial relations processes, and I don’t know if we are going to engage this process until BAMP is able to show a foundation upon which we can enter into proper negotiations that they can take the health care system forward.”
For its part, BAMP said the meeting came to an abrupt end when it informed the board that it had prepared and booked a paid advertisement, by mandate of its members, prior to agreeing on the meeting with the board.
“This has been one of the most disappointing days in my life when I have seen that doctors, who are accorded such a high place of prominence in this country, would show such little consideration for the board who represents the Government, which represents the people of Barbados.
“I will ask Barbadians not just [to] pray for the recovery and the resumption of full health care services,” the chairman added, “but really ask them to pray for members of the executive of BAMP.”
In a Press release yesterday, BAMP said it was committed to the public to continue its role in the delivery of health care, and that it was keen on “a speedy resolution of the impasse”.
The dispute was sparked by the board’s decision to terminate the contract of consultant radiologist Dr Cecil Rambarat. Another consultant, Jerry Emtage, one of the island’s best known urologists, filed an injunction against the QEH after learning he was being removed from the hospital’s list of consultants.

Any institution should be run by people who have the knowledge about how it works, people should not be placed on boards just because they are the friends of politicians or support a political party. We have seen how these people bring they own style of management to stop the people in charge from performing they duties.  People hired to function in certain capacities should be allowed to do so.

I will say it again…. UNIONS ARE RUINING THE DELIVERY OF SERVICES IN BARBADOS!!!

It does not matter what industry or service - it is clear that the bad level of service in Barbados is caused by the power of Unions locally and this is not likely to change.
Workers perform in the way they do because unions will stand behind them under any conditions.

You have to seek pray for the QEH’s administrative wing Rev Hewitt, who did several things incorrectly. For if things were done in accordance with proper policy, many doctors and other nuisances would long have been skinned out of the people’s place and operations would hardly have generated to this low.
Pray for an understanding that friendship, business and politics is a bad mix.

This whole debate has all the elments of a farce.
Yes the board erred when it did not follow it’s own rules for disciplinary action- nothing on file yet fired the doctor. And now BAMP clouds the issue by doing something is not only in bad taste but gives the impression of a hidden agenda (physicians are on record complaining about the service failure of doctor in question to perform), you cannot negotiate via the media the public is your employer not your jury.
I would like to say to both parties the mistakes have been made on both sides and that health care needs to be free of politics and posturing. Resolve these issues which are quite small when everyone is truthful, and get back to the nation’s business.

QEH DEADLOCK! The LIVE and REAL situation is that poor people depend on the health services (though minimal)that are provided by these poorly managed and under staffed institutions. The politicians and bureaucrats are negotiating on behalf of themselves, and the pulic have little or no input in matters that affects their lives. Most of these power brokers are privileged individuals; and their health care is provided at HOSPITALS & CLINICS in the USA. They really do care; and it is all about “THEMSELVES”.

These doctors are power hungry and have all the benefits and make all the money, while the QEH is drowning in debt and crumbling.

I hope that sanity and humility will return to the bargaining table and that somebody will show some leadership in this whole fiasco.

The more I listen to Rev Guy the more I remember why I turned away from the established Church.

How can it be all right for him as Chairman of the QEH to pursue the Government’s agenda, but accuse the doctors of having a political agenda. Something is wrong here.

Rev Guy will soon learn that Bajans do not like their religious leaders caught up in confusion- secular or religious. The diocese is littered with their skeletons.

I have one question.

How does Reverend Guy Hewitt become the Chairman of the QEH.

Sounds to me like a lot of self serving - political oh ha for lack of an polite descriptive.

This sounds to me like a very small group of people with something to gain.

Just disgusting on both sides.

Barbadian people should not be held to ransom in this manner - this kind of action by people who provide an essential service should be AGAINST THE LAW plain and simple.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

I honestly believe that in Barbados there are too many square pegs in round holes.  It is about time that people are given jobs in managerial position based on merit and not on political affiliation or friendship.  A long as this continues nothing will change.  It is the poor people who always suffer.  Those who can afford it including the politicians, should they become ill you will see how quickly they jump on the next plane out to seek medical attention.

It is the Barbadian people that are caught in this cat and mouse game and are hurting the care/services at the QEH is very bad it is time that things improve. My sister had to have surgery for colon cancer and had to wait for almost three months for the surgery all of this time the cancer was growing in her body. I pray when I visit there on vacation not to need any medical care I would have to get a flight back to NY.

I’m confused I saw on the Peoples Business the CEO and the Chairman discussing the issue of the QEH and how sad the consultants etal. had him and law unto themselves etc. Talking in public, BAMP responds in the press and are accused of showing bad faith. Doesn’t semm fair
