Shaquana Quintyne is the new darling of West Indies’ women’s cricket.
The 17-year-old Graydon Sealy schoolgirl bowled the West Indies to a delightful 11-run victory over traditionally strong England in the Tri-Nation Twenty20 International Series at Kensington Oval on Friday night with career-best figures of five for 16.
Watched by just over 2 000 supportive spectators inside a packed 3Ws Stand, the only one opened, csusing fans to endure a long wait to get inside the venue, West Indies posted a challenging total of 140 for six after they were sent in to bat.
Despite a spate of dropped catches and missed run out opportunities in the field, the West Indies were still able to restrict England to 129 for eight in their 20 overs.
Coming on to bowl the 10th over with England motoring along at seven runs an over, Quintyne, who hails from Market Hill, St George, triggered a dramatic collapse in which eight wickets fell for just 27 runs.
At that stage, England were scoring almost off every delivery as captain Charlotte Edwards and Lauren Winfield featured in a flourishing opening partnership in 69.
By the time Player of the Match Quintyne bowled Danielle Wyatt to finish her penetrative four-over spell of leg-spin, England had sensationally slumped to 96 for eight.
Quintyne started her demolition job with her fourth delivery, a flipper which castled the free-scoring Winfield, who had hit three fours and a six in making 36 off 25 balls.
And in her next over, Juliana Nero leapt into the air to pouch a magnificent one-handed catch above her head at extra cover to remove the classy Edwards for 39, which contained four boundaries off 40 balls.
Quintyne then combined with her captain, wicketkeeper Merissa Aguilleira, to remove Natalie Sciver and Sarah Taylor in her third over while left-arm spinner Shanel Daley bowled the potentially dangerous Tammy Beaumont for three.
Jenny Gunn, who was taunted by spectators who had constantly yelled no-ball when she was bowling, was then run out by King’s pin-point throw from long leg to the wicketkeeper, as she attempted a suicidal third run.
There was a late twist from the never-say-die English side as Danielle Hazell and Holly Colvin frustratingly added 33 runs in the last 4.2 overs in an unbroken ninth-wicket stand, taking 15 runs off the penultimate over from Stafanie Taylor. But with 17 still needed, Daley delivered a tidy final over, conceding just five runs.
Earlier, opener Taylor anchored the West Indies’ innings with a solid 40 off 47 balls with three fours, adding 45 for the second wicket with Kyshona Knight, who stroked a run-a-ball 28, which included two sixes and a four.
However, the big-hitting came from Deandra Dottin and left-hander Stacy-Ann King as 81 runs came in the last eight overs. Dottin clouted three sixes in a quick-fire 32 off just 19 balls and after she was stumped, King belted two fours and two sixes in a breezy 24 off a mere 10 balls in the closing overs.
Off-spinner Hazell was England’s best bowler with three for 19, claiming King and Aguilleira with the last two balls of the innings.
