RBC Insurance is the top Barbados green business of 2012.
The company within the RBC group received the accolade from the Future Centre Trust as the most outstanding Barbados company paying heed to the environment in its day-to-day operations last year.
It emerged foremost among nine companies and offices approved for their green business achievements in 2012.
The others are Maas Clinic, the British High Commission, Harris Paints Ltd, Verdun House, the Barbados Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Structural Systems Ltd, KPMG, and RBC Wealth Management.
Awards were handed out recently at a ceremony where chairman of the Trust, Vivian Anne-Gittens, spoke of an intention to have more companies signed onto its Green Business Barbados programme.
This five-year-old non-governmental organization recently received a funding grant from the Inter-American Development Bank, and Gittens said the money was to develop a programme of certification enabling the trust to define what comprises a Green Business.
She said a template for this certification was being developed and envisioned the trust rolling out this honour credential throughout the Caribbean shortly after its finalization.
Gittens, who is also Publisher and CEO of the Nation Publishing Company, said though her corporation could be described as a green company in practice, it was one of those entities in need of that certification.
Currently, the trust only approves and recognizes businesses as it fine-tunes the certification programme.
In order to become an approved green business as the nine companies recognized for 2012, the entity must work with the trust’s Green Business coordinator to implement various measures in five component areas: waste reduction and recycling, energy conservation and renewable energy, water conservation, pollution control, and management and environmental education.
