On a day when the sun was fierce the athletes at Sharon Primary added to that heat as they battled on the playing field at Lears, St Michael last Friday.

A keen contest it was among the four houses vying for this year’s championship title: Gomes (blue), King (yellow), Moore (green) and Sobers (red).

The athletes of Sobers House burnt up the track, causing some spectators to chant calypsonian Blood’s popular song, Mi Foot On Fire!

They dominated the sprints and relays. House captain Toriann Alleyne led them to victory, with other sterling performances from Keon Clarke, Savion Hoyte, Romario Yearwood and Keanna Castello.

In the earlier part of the day, Gomes’ House came closest to giving the Sobers team a challenge. But even Gomes’ victory in the tug-of-war was not enough to help them catch up with Sobers House.

Sobers won the championships by more than 60 points. Gomes held on to second spot, while King was third, followed by Moore.

The competitive spirit spilled over to fun events which were not for points. There was an open old scholars’ race and an incentive was on offer for the house that collected the most garbage from the field.

Do you agree with the recent CADRES poll that shows that while some Barbadians want to see REDjet back in the air, it should not be at the expense of taxpayers?
