The Ministry of Education knew for several days that the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union (BSTU) would not be attending a meeting with Jeff Broomes and his representatives.
That is the word from president Mary Redman, who stayed away from yesterday’s meeting for all disputants in the Alexandra School impasse with a four-member committee chaired by Minister of Education Ronald Jones.
Other members of the committee set up by the Prime Minister to resolve the dispute are Minister of Labour Esther Byer-Suckoo, Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite and Parliamentary Secretary Harry Husbands.
Redman told the Press the union had communicated its intentions to the Ministry in a letter dated January 16, and that it was reiterated in another set of correspondence after the invitation for yesterday’s meeting was received on January 17. That letter also sought clarification on an ambiguity.

I would think that all sides would want to meet and thrash this thing out once and for all!
Look, Mr. Minister, FIRED the lot of them! Shut up Shop and relieve the suffering students!
This is clearly a game being played out here.

Comment LinkIf what Ms. Redman is saying here is true, how come then Mr. Perry turned up at the meeting yesterday claiming he was there to represent the BSTU? What is really going on? Is it true that a certain teacher don’t turn up very often at LODGE SCHOOL to teach the children they are supposing to be teaching. Maybe the Minister of Education need to turn his attention to LODGE SCHOOL also.

Comment LinkI am completed baffled how someone who leads a union is so ignorant of labour relations. Mediation, negotiation and arbitration all require a meeting of both parties. To essentially say (in Bajan parlance) “I ain’t comin’ nuh way ef he dey” is not only unprofessional but far from constructive.

Comment Linktanya ,what’s there to be thrashed out,,all points, actions and issues have been already tabled. we are way past that.. this is decision time. when will all the parties involved here realize that ,at this point and time neither mr. broomes or mrs. redman is the subject, all points pro and con have been tabled,“who’s right” is not the issue"what’s right” is. The person or department that has jurisdiction is the minister and ministry of education. As they have expressed this is a uncharted territory and must be handled as such, however this can be likened to a liner leaving the port, the pilot who is and expert at charting the coastal waters takes the ship out safely and then turns it over to the captain. When minister Jones was in the position of the pilot. he allowed the ship to sail unto a reef,,thats the reason for this stalemate…. Mr. Broomes has a unique style, he is not scared to make tough decisions, he can garnish public support and is willing to stand behind his words and decisions.. all the makings of a good political servant.. he is worthy of an appointed position in our government, this my friends is my solution to this crisis.

Comment Link@ yogi, if you were going to kensington, would you through chapman’s lane or would you take fontabelle? would you go in a blp meeting voicing favour for the dlp. i see it as a postive strategic move/decision for the president of the btsu not to attend the meeting “.minister of education
THE PRINCIPAL PLAYER/CHAIRMAN/PERSON WITH THE POWER TO INFLUENCE HAD ALREADY MADE A DECISION.. this was a farce… how easily we let people blow smoke up you know where and accept it without looking at the whole picture.. the people of Barbados needs to ask minister jones to resign and if he refuses he should be impeached

Comment LinkAlright Wayne, if they have thrashed out everything already, what is the hold-up then with the final decision? What is the minister really doing then? Who really has the final say/decision in the matter? Whomever that person is should be relieved of their duties since they cannot function as they are being paid to do. Going on and on week after week like they don’t have anything else better to do! NONSENSE!
