Rihanna to get Apes Hill land OK

Tue, June 15, 2010 - 1:47 AM

by ALBERT BRANDFORD
BARBADIAN international pop star Rihanna is being given a plot of land by Government at the upscale Apes Hill Development in St James.
A resolution to vest the 2 635 square-metre parcel of land in the superstar, under her given name – Robyn Rihanna Fenty – is expected to be taken to the House of Assembly today at 10 a.m. by Minister of Housing and Lands Michael Lashley.
Apes Hill Club is a partnership between  Sir Charles Williams, owner of the island’s largest construction company, and Landmark Land Company, one of the most prestigious community, golf and resort developers in the world.
Set among 470 acres of the most beautiful and dramatic scenery Barbados has to offer, Apes Hill golf and polo community has panoramic views of both the famous west coast and dramatically rugged  east coast.
According to the addendum of the resolution, on February 18, 2010, Cabinet agreed to donate the land, which had been acquired by private treaty between Apes Hill Development SRL and the Crown on June 30, 2009,  to Rihanna.
It will be subject to the easements, restrictive covenants and conditions contained in the conveyance and Deed  of Covenant between  the Apes Hill Club  Owners Association  and the Crown,  dated June 30, 2009.
Among the provisions of the grant are that the payment of all legal costs relating to this transaction will be met by the Crown; and in the event of the resale of the land within 15 years, Rihanna shall reimburse the Crown the price paid for the land.
There is another resolution to compulsorily acquire two parcels of land, totalling 7 230.4 square metres, owned respectively by Forbes International Moving & Storage Co. Ltd (3 688.8 square metres), and Eric Hassell & Son Ltd (3 541.6 square metres), both at Deacons Road, St Michael, for housing development. (AB)

Why are they giving Rihanna this land?,What is she really doing for Barbados that nobody else never did?Why not develop the place to bring in some money and even name it after her or something….If she love Bim so bad she would invest in it…how much charities does she have in Bim…and or USA.This is unnecessary,,and an insult to taxpayers especially those looking for a lil’house spot for years now.WUNNA WANT NOTICING.

I knew it,I knew it, that bajans would be against the
idea of giving Rhianna a gift of land.I`m sure that
since Rhianna hit the world scene thousands of people
have learn that Barbados is
not in Africa or Jamaica.
Now to all the people that
don`t like her,let me ask this question to all you bleeding heart folkes that say that the land should be given to the poor, they should build a home for the homeless and all that. If Rhianna takes the land, other rich and famous will
want to have a home there
also but to think that a developer would invest millions of dollars in things like a golf course and resorts and then donate a piece to the poor and homeless would be out of their mind. Bajans please wake up and get with it.
Investors are there to make money.

Ridicilous! If she has a conscience she will donate this land to those who really need it.
Sounds to me like a politician trying to make a name for himself by using someone who has made it ‘big’.
A slap in the face of those who deserve it more.

@ Ryan and all the others that see nothing wrong with this… Please sit down and think about what most people are trying to say. She should be given something, but not when other people in Barbados have to save for years to make a down payment on land..

She does not even DESERVE any title in Barbados, her nude pics shows she lacks understanding at her tender age…

I’m really upset and could go on for days… but it will make no difference…

I agree; what a waste of money that could be better spent to help those who really need it more; fix the roads with that money.  Rhianna can buy her own land; or find her a cheaper piece of land.  Millions of dollars for land for Rhianna in these hard economic times; what a waste of money. I know she has put B’dos. out there a bit more than we were before; but B’dos. can’t afford to be spending that kind of money on land for Rhianna.  She can afford to buy her own land.

Is government in the business of giving away land and other property? Are ministers in the business of giving out cash to school children?
And we wonder how and why we have become a nation of material things.
I have known people who have put in well over 60 years in the so-call Sugar Industry that has made us free, and have built up this country by the sweat of their brows, and have and are still smelling hell to survive. And no one have seen it fit over the years to show appreciation foe them, except to make sport at Crop Over.
Nero Fiddled while Rome burnt, is a fitting title for yesterday’s parliamentary debate on land for Ms Fenty.

If I remember correctly, there was a big event in Barbados when Rihanna won her first Grammy award honouring her for her achievements and was promised a piece of land in Apes Hill. That was announced publicly. Why wasn’t there an objection then? If people had a problem with it then they should have complained then.  Since that time Rihanna has gone on to earn millions of dollars, fame and success. It is probably true that she can afford to buy her own property in Barbados but this is not a question of wheather she should be given the land or not but a matter of a Government honouring a commitment made.  Is this what we want to teach our children?

When the politicians are looking for individuals to vote them into power, they find themselves into the poor communities asking for votes. When the elections are over, these people are forgotten.  Everyday, in the Barbados Newspapers, you can read of some poor person struggling to be heard by the authorities regarding issues with their homes.  Months and even years go by and nothing is done.  Some Barbadians have homes that are walking away from them. Homes that are sinking in with cracks all over, issues with the sewage system etc., etc., While it is nice to be recognized for your accomplishments, there is a less expensive way to do so, and donate that money to someone who really needs it.  There is a double standard here, it would appear that only some Barbadians have entitlement. Unbelievable!!!!!

A couple of years ago, Rhianna was just an unknown Barbadian girl.  Today, this young lady is promoting Barbados even more than the BTA and she is doing it without cost to the island and if a cost is put to that….it can buy Apes Hill and not just piece of it.
Barbadians only see you when ‘they think that you are making it big’, but they do not see the hard work that is done to get there. Thus, so few have gone that far….
How can anyone compare the work of Rhianna in a short six years with that of Allison Hinds who limited herself to the wuk up culture of the region for the past 20 years? Don’t tell me that she performed in elsewhere, the point is that if you go to Italy, Isreal, Ethiopia, whereever in the world….it is Rhianna’s name that spells Barbados ...not Allison Hinds.
Barbados CANNOT pay Rhianna for what she has done thus far for this island.

All I am hearing is that the Goverment should give poor Barbadians land. My question is if the Goverment give the land to poor people what are they going to build on it are they going to watch the bush grow on it, be for real. non nationals are buying the same piece of land and why not give her a piece of the rock.enjoy your lot girl let them talk.

@bajangirl i can see that your still young, saying poor people doesnt necessarily mean those who are on the street or those as you put it watch the grass grow on the lawn cause that person would have to be young or ignorant also not having a JOB ;anyways aint nobody grudging the mere fact is that Rhianna can buy her land her houses etc etc this government is using taxpayers money clearly not yours to give the Star who can afford this and much more land that she will very well not live on…Oprah has land here she bought it Ryan Brathwaite was given land by COWilliams not the government COW gave what he owned not what was on opt for sale using TAXPAYERS MONEY TO BUY ... so the goverment can rename APE HILL RHIANNA HEIGHTS maybe the land will sell faster get it…maybe you got it..NO body says dont award her ...Land worth 1.2million is ridiculous

If she has any class she won’t accept it. It’s not for the government to give away - shame on them. A great many people have been promoting Barbados for a very long all around the world and we never got compensated. Au contraire in my case. Can you just see the Merrymen or the ex Cecilian Singers accepting such an offer? How low can you go? Last I heard pop stars are not poor.

My comments are exactly mirrored each and every individual that made they too cents worth about the idiotic decisions being raise by the present running Government official..
First and foremost,i am totally appalled about a so call area that is so well suited for the rich and famous call Apes Hill could they have had a better name for such a so call ritsy place (that a bomb)!!
I personally comment really is why the government is giving land to an already “rich” celeb??What has RiRi done to deserve this, absolutely nothing..has she ever arranged a concert to promote the needs for her poor fellow bajans absolutely nothing..I am bajan living abroad,i’m sure the average tax paying working bajan must be totally pissed with weird consideration..Statistic as i read are in total disagreement of the decision, maybe the official should think twice if he need to be elected..

RI-RI IS NOT A GOOD ROLE MODEL FOR THE YOUTH OF BARBADOS, I AM SICK OF HEARING ABOUT HER, AND GIVING HER LAND THAT COST SO MUCH IS A DISGRACE TO THE POOR PEOPLE OF BARBADOS, WHAT IS THE GOV’T THINKING, DON’T THEY SEE RI-RI IS ONLY ABOUT HERSELF, TELL HER TO START SPENDING SOME OF HER MILLIONS IN BIM, GIVE TO CHARITY AND A GOOD DECENT PERSON WOULD SAY NO TO THE LAND ESPECIALLY SINCE SHE COULD BUY ANY PLOT SHE WANT, DO YOU PEOPLE OF BARBADOS WANT YOUR CHILDREN TO BE LIKE HER, BAJANS NEED TO WAKE UP AND IF THE PRESENT GOV’T DON’T DO SOMETHING ABOUT ALL THIS , HE SHOULD NOT BE PUT BACK IN OFFICE. THANK GOD I DO NOT LIVE THERE ANYMORE

I feel she should have just been given a national honour.  Land is currently expensive and this gift now creates the expectation where other Barbadians who become famous should also be given multi-million dollar land. If you have 1-2 Barbadians every couple of years, then what?  How do we decide going forward? What if a Barbadian wins gold at the Olympics? Instead suppose they get two bronze medals should they get land?  What about the Merrymen or Rupee? I feel a national honour should have been enough.  Trinidadians make a big deal about their former “Trinity Cross”.  Well, perhaps Barbados’ national honours system needs to be reviewed. The actions of the Government give the perception that the national awards system wasn’t good enough.

How many folks can afford land in Apes Hill ,so most likely some visitor will buy it any way.I think we all would want the same for our daughther .I think that Barbadian feel she achieved too much too soon, talk sbout not being a role model for Barbados, she is in entertainer not a Gospel singer. I see young ladies in Barbados carrying on far worse than her,at least she is an show buisness. I think most of the Barbadian are just shocked at her success ,but don’t hate appreiciate .People in other parts of the world just love her. I know there are other good or better singers out there but she had what there were looking for not only aa a singer but her personality ,which so many others lack. So that’s life some will win the lottery, others will achieved by normal day to day work, tough luck.

My People, My People, relax, the govt has made a master stroke (apparently it is backfiring). The govt will make back ALOT more from Rihanna than they are giving her, simple economics. By giving Rihanna this land it has increase the value of the other lots, people will pay more if they know international stars are their neighbours. Its like restaurants in L.A letting Will Smith (and other stars) dine for free, they know he can afford to pay, but its better business to have him eat their often and not pay than have him pay and eat there once, cause he will attract better and more clientele and then you can raise the prices on your menu. To counter all the negative PR what Rihanna can do (Lord knows she can afford it) is to donate the cost of the land ($100,000) to some needy charity in Bim. Cause ya know Bajans dont like giving ya nuttin fa free. Then I can safely say she has done something for Barbados.

*sigh*...Ok so this female who got discovered by Jay-z
that has so called “talent”
whom just so happens to come from this beautiful island Barbados, is getting praised? Rihanna, fame(i guess), money(kinda)
self-respect? None! In what way shape or from does she shows that she is proud of her island (and mine). She does not dance, she does not take pride when she is in interviews or where ever she may be. For goodness sake, she got abused! What does that show? Rihanna shows how weak of “woman” she really is! well, till this day…im not seeing how Rihanna reprensents Barbados =[
